Job Purpose
This interim appointment has been established to support the authority in delivering a high-quality and compliant Statement of Accounts. The postholder will provide specialist technical expertise to ensure the timely completion, accuracy, and integrity of the authority’s financial statements in accordance with statutory deadlines and regulatory requirements. Working collaboratively with senior officers and external stakeholders, the Interim Accountant will contribute to strengthening financial governance, resolving complex accounting issues, and ensuring the authority meets its statutory reporting obligations to the highest standard.

Your new role
- Lead on the preparation and completion of the authority’s Statement of Accounts, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely submission.
- Provide expert technical accounting advice in line with current CIPFA, IFRS, and local government accounting standards.
- Support the coordination of audit activities, liaising with internal and external auditors to address queries and resolve outstanding matters.
- Review and improve financial reporting processes and controls to strengthen overall financial governance.
- Support budget monitoring, balance sheet reconciliations, and other key financial management activities as required.
What you will need to succeed
- Fully qualified accountant (e.g. CIPFA, ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) with significant post-qualification experience in a local authority or similar public sector environment.
- Proven track record of preparing compliant and high-quality statutory accounts within strict deadlines.
- Strong technical knowledge of local government accounting codes, standards, and financial reporting requirements.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder-management skills with the ability to work collaboratively across services.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, applying sound professional judgement and attention to detail.
